The Seven of Spades = Five + Two (Instagram)

A post shared by Judy K (@weirdeye) on

"The Seven... shows a group of five 'arrows' on one side... and two on another... an image of being stuck between the Mortal Injury of Five and the conflict of Two - it is an image of being delayed or stuck, unable to move without harm..." - pg. 25, Hands of Fate, Robin Artisson.

I read that passage and suddenly thought of Pamela's Seven of Swords. I'm not suggesting the playing card meaning relates to the RWS meaning - but it is a curious visual coincidence.

Response to "Determining death with Playing Cards Cartomancy"

Angelo Dicostanzo is a playing card reading virtuoso. If you want to discover how reading playing cards works, watch any of his videos.

In his most recent video, he discusses a situation in which he was asked to determine how someone would die. Normally this is something he would not address (nor I!), but in this instance there were very special circumstances, and the resulting spread was too good an opportunity for learning not to share, on YouTube and in his group on Facebook - The Magic of Playing Cards.

And I want to share my "interpretive process" for this one, as well - as an example of how someone who comes from a different card reading background, with different meanings, and who doesn't even have a meaning for one of the cards, can pull it together. If I can, anyone can, is basically what I'm hoping to get across. đŸ™‚

But I don't want to spoil the impact of Angelo's excellent video, so please watch it first before you read my scribblings...

.
.
Watched it? Brilliant, eh?

So, here's how it went for me. 😏 The first thing that jumped out at me was the 9 of Hearts. This is my "Great joy or Good event" card, but traditionally it's thought of as the Wish card - you will get what you've been wishing for. As death doesn't quite fit into the great joy/good event category, I decided this card was showing that the person will die they way they want to.

At this point my rational mind piped up and said "Most people want to die in their sleep". That seemed reasonable, so I looked to the other cards for confirmation... "Mmm, they're not saying that."  Let's pick them apart.

The Jack of Spades is my "False friend". Someone with negative intentions. Not aggressively malicious like the Queen of Clubs, but someone who's "not right", as my friend would say. And traditionally, the Jacks can represent thoughts, so here we have negative, misleading, perhaps sinister thoughts.

Then there's the 5 of Clubs. If you follow my blog you know that I read a with stripped deck of 32 cards, the lowest being the 7s, so I don't actually have a meaning for the 5 of Clubs. But I follow lots of readers who do use all 52 cards, and I've picked up a few things. When confronted with a card I don't "use", I consider its number, in this case 5, which for me is a number of Disruption, and the suit, Clubs being the suit of Actions. So this is disruptive action.

It began to dawn on me that this was heading in the "not natural causes" direction. I was hoping what I was looking at was assisted suicide.

But.... Why the dark presence of the Jack of Spades, when, ideally, assisted suicide is an act of love and respect? And the 5 of Clubs? True, even at best, such a death would be disruptive, but it seemed there was more to it...

The Jack is looking directly at the 5 of Clubs and on to the 9 of Hearts. And acknowledging tradition again, 5s can signify a hand. This was someone with negative thoughts, or thoughts perceived by others to be negative or misguided, taking direct, disruptive action - death by their own hand - to achieve their desired outcome.

God be with them.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In conclusion, I hope that demonstrating how I negotiated my wobbly way through this trying reading will encourage you to approach your readings with flexibility and creativity. Like I said - if I can do it, anyone can.

In praise of the Grand Tableau (again)

This is my favourite way to read playing cards.

Skatkarten, Französisches bild - ASS Altenburger

Ok, it's easier for me because I only use 32 cards, but you can count cards to get just 32 or 36* for a spread.

And I don't attempt to read every single card. I just home in on the interesting stuff. Laying all the cards out gives your deck the opportunity to hit you with some really juicy clusters and juxtapositions.

For instance, I've clearly left it too long to do a spread like this for myself because I'm sitting - Queen of Hearts - right at the bottom of the spread with all sorts of “stuff” going on over my head. And look at that line of three Aces with me staring intently at the bottom one. In fact, you could see that whole column as a situation “between” me and my Significant Other - King of Hearts – at the top of the spread. Who are those two Kings in the middle of the spread and what is their interest in the 8 of Spades? Perhaps the cards above can tell me more about them. And if you place a special significance on the first three cards of the spread, what might two 9s plus an 8 of Diamonds tell you?

There’s so much potential in a Grand Tableau – it’s entirely up to you how much time and energy you want to put into it.

*For 36 cards - take a 52-card deck and count by 3s through the deck, discarding cards 1 and 2, and placing #3 to the side. Repeat until the deck is exhausted (you'll have one card left over, discard it, and a pile of 17 cards). Take the discards and repeat the process - now you'll have two extras and 28 cards selected. Repeat one more time, so 3 times in all (the magickal 3 x 3 effect) and you'll end up with 36 cards and no leftovers - a nice symmetry.

Dmitry Korolev presents Les Fiancées - "The classic French fortune-telling game for probing the difficult relationships - along with some history chatter!"

I have a real soft spot for these "everyman" spreads. I think many of us, especially in the UK and North America, think we're somehow special, perhaps even spiritually advanced because we Consult The Cardsℱ. But in other parts of the world, many people spread the cards for themselves quite ordinarily and unpretentiously. It does my heart good. đŸ™‚ï»ż

YouTube: How 'Nandora Tarot' uses her Gypsy Witch Fortune Telling cards

This is so cool!

A lot of people struggle to use Gypsy Witch cards because the deck combines elements of Lenormand plus additional symbols, a full set of playing cards, and Near and Far placement meanings (like the method found in the "Philippe LeNormand" instruction sheets that came with early Lennie decks). They don't know which way to jump first!

I love that Naomi has taken this "disadvantage" and created a magical method all her own.

Want to receive a spirit message through your cards?

Would you like to use your cards to receive a message from a deceased loved one or a particular spirit guide?

Assign them a significator, a card that will be their "place holder" in the deck. For example, for me, my mother always appears as the Queen of Diamonds* when using playing cards, and the Bouquet when using Lenormand.

Shuffle the deck and then thumb through it face up until you find their card. The card before (on top of) it reflects what they want to talk about or how they're feeling, and the two cards behind (below) it expand on the subject or form the message about the first card.

Need more information from them or want to ask a question? Reshuffle and repeat the process. Don't overdo it though. When you start getting jibberish is when you know you've worn them out. đŸ˜‰

*Because in traditional German courts this Queen is holding a carnation, my mother's favourite flower.

Heads-up: Selling some decks

I've had a box of unloved tarot decks and boxed sets, as well as various oracle/fortune telling decks, sitting around taking up space for far too long now. So I've finally started listing them on eBay. I've set a few up already, timed to start a day or two apart, and I hope to keep up the process so that I can get the rest of the box-full listed over the next 2-3 weeks.

The first listing is already up and running - The Atavist Tarot Boxed Set

Coming up next are a Kenzo Psy-Chic Tarot deck (sold), 1st edition Alchemical Tarot boxed set (sold), Alchemical Tarot: Renewed deck (sold), El Tarot Universal de Waite (Spanish only) boxed set (sold|), and an Ananda Tarot boxed set.

These are not bargains. I've listed them close to the prices I've seen them listed for elsewhere. They may not actually be *selling* at those prices đŸ˜‰ but I'll give it a shot. This is purely a heads-up in case you've been looking for one of these decks. I've got plenty of economical decks, and a few books, to add later on, but I thought I'd get rid of the bulkier and more valuable decks first.

You used to be able to list separate shipping costs to all the different world postal zones, but now it's UK and either Europe OR Worldwide. Choosing the World Zone 2 price for everyone wouldn't be fair. Nor would it incline the closer people to bid! So I've listed a European price and asked those outside the EU to contact me for a shipping cost if they're interested. I'll then send an invoice with the correct price at the end of the auction.

Please do not ask me to sell any of the items directly. I will only sell through eBay.

As I get more listed, I'll try to remember to make a note of them here...
Coming Soon -
The I-Ching Tarot boxed set (sold)
I-Ching Holitzka deck (sold)
The Elemental Tarot boxed set
"Original" Rider Waite deck - Random House UK 1993 (sold)
The Black Book of Cards playing cards deck
Mosaic Dream Tarot deck
Maroon Tarot deck - original, majors only
Mystisches Kipper deck - German only

It seems my grandfather is a bit of a dark horse

While communing with my ancestors this Samhain/Halloween just passed, Opa, my maternal grandfather, again let it be known that he wanted to spend more time with me. As I was going to be off work this week, I promised him I'd make some time to "chat".

I had the house to myself for a couple of hours this morning, so I fired up the incense burner and threw on a bit of patchouli. I often use patchouli when working with the ancestors, and Opa has a fondness for it, as do I. To be honest, I don't care for the smell of burning patchouli. I much prefer patchouli oil, but, you know, protocol. đŸ˜

The scene set, I invited Opa to speak to me, and the first spread was a "direct hit". I'm not sharing that one because it was essentially a spirit hug and message from him to me. But "hellos" out of the way, I then asked him if he had anything he wanted to tell me.

As I shuffled, one card flew out face down, so I put it to one side. I then pulled two more cards. Interestingly, instead of cutting the deck and pulling the cards from there, as I always do, I pulled them straight off the top. I did it entirely without thinking, so I'm putting that down to Opa's influence.

I turned over the Jack first and laughed that I was being *told* I was getting a message. This message involved a woman and a change (8D is usually not an easy change). I suspected it was something to do with a relative of a friend of mine. I saw more hints in the cards but, of course, it's private, so I'll leave it at that. Suffice it to say, I suddenly got the urge to call her. But first, I checked the bottom card of the deck, to see if what I was reading into this pair was correct, and I got my No card. So I stopped, and I didn't call my friend.

Instead, I reshuffled and pulled some cards for further information, in order to make sense of this trio. The Queen of Clubs appeared again. As I laid the last card, my phone rang.

Said friend shared something that had just happened to her that made perfect sense of the cards I'd drawn. And the second spread turned out to contain advice for her.

It really was (Jack of Clubs) a message about a friend. And I've learned that the Queen of Clubs could represent this particular friend in future. (Who am I kidding? "This particular friend". I'm an introvert; I only have one friend. đŸ˜‹) Thinking about it, the suit of Clubs is a perfect match for her.

But the big news is that Opa has left me a bit stunned. Who knew? For the past three years I've been concentrating on working with Oma, the card reader, right? (No offence; love you; still want your help!) And there was Opa waiting in the wings for his opportunity to shine. No wonder he came across a bit pushy on the brief, once-a-year occasions that I've called on him. Sorry Opa! I can see us collaborating a lot more in future.

Family rallies 'round

On this day of my honouring my grandmother's birthday and dealing with Brexit [shudder] I asked Oma to come to me and comfort me.

The Queen of Diamonds/Mum came instead, or rather 'as well' because the shadow card was the Queen of Spades/Oma, and reassured me that everything will be okay soon.

Thank you, I really needed to hear that right now.  â™„ you.

Reading Mash-Up

Another video - In which Judy confesses to doing something she said she wouldn't do - i.e. use more than one deck to answer a single question (Earth Magic Oracle, playing cards and Tarot).

In my defense, when, as part of Ethony's 31 Days of Tarot Challenge, I answered that question, I envisaged spreading several decks at once and then commencing the reading. What I did was spread and read each deck one at a time, and then round off by combining the overall message from all three.

The person I read for knows I'm only practicing on him, so I felt comfortable trying something a bit different. It was fun seeing how the three spreads, plus the 4th "Don't Do/Do spread (check out the Angelo Nasios link below), all seemed to align. It was also interesting to spot patterns between them. For instance, three of the four began with an Ace, a different one for each.

I don't think this is something I'd make a habit of doing, but at least the prospect isn't as daunting anymore.

32-Card Fortune Telling Spreads?

If you scroll down to the very bottom of this page you'll see that I have a "visits" counter, powered by StatCounter. I was checking said stats when I noticed that someone from Nevada stumbled across my blog by Googling "32-card fortune telling spreads". They were directed to my "German Method" post.

Fair enough, but if you should wander back this way my Googling friend, I have to confess that I actually don't use those two spreads. (Sorry Oma, but I just haven't clicked with them.) If I were to recommend a spread for 32 card decks (other than your basic "line of n") it would be the spread that uses all of them - the 8x4 Grand Tableau.

I don't know whether you're interested in read playing cards or another "small" deck, but I'm a fan of GTs generally - see this post. I've certainly had good results reading playing cards this way.

Apart from that, as long as it doesn't require more than 32 cards, I suppose you could use any spread that appeals to you. If you were searching for something specific or have any questions I might be able to help with, drop me a comment. And if anyone else out there knows of a purpose-built spread for 32 card decks, we'd both like to hear from you! :)

I'm a Kapherus fangirl

I'm fortunate to have been given my grandmother's meanings for reading playing cards. But if I were starting from scratch I would adopt the meanings and methods of J David Arcuri, aka 'Kapherus' and 'Cardseer'.

As it is, Oma passed on diddly-squat about HOW to read cards, so I augment my meager natural abilities by following Kaph's clear and informative blog posts on the subject. Such as this one, which I highly recommend -

Judy says...

When I began this blog I said that "...this is where I'll be housing my growing list of cartomancy links and snippets of useful info." I haven't been very good at keeping up with that. I confess, most of my online cartomancy activity takes place on Facebook.

Sometimes someone there posts an interesting idea or question and I am compelled to share my wisdom. Ok, maybe not wisdom, LOL - but at least what I've been able to glean from other knowledgeable practitioners or what I've found to be true through my own practice. It struck me that, if I were a better blogger, those replies are the sort of thing I'd be posting here. So, that's what I think I'll do - repost some of those comments here.

For now, I'll share links to my favourite Facebook groups.

Fortune Telling with a Pack of Ordinary Playing Cards - all kinds of playing card meanings and methods are explored. I'm an admin in this group.

Cartomancy Study Group - an active group that focuses mainly on playing cards as well as other forms of cartomancy.

Lenormand and Cartomancy - a very relaxed and friendly group.

Give me a wave if you're there. :)

A German Method of Fortune Telling with 32 Playing Cards

As this is my most popular post, I'll leave a note here to let you know that this blog has now moved to Judy Reads Cards. I hope you'll join me there.
13-Apr-18: I have finally uploaded my "expanded" meanings.

My grandmother Helene, from Niedersachsen/Lower Saxony in Germany, told fortunes with coffee grounds, Swedenborg cards and Skat cards, i.e. a 32-card deck of playing cards, also known as a Piquet deck: sevens up to Kings plus Aces. When she learned that I was interested in such things, she sent me a deck with her meanings written on the cards and a brief note of how she read them.

Lene, as she was called, though I would never have dreamt of calling her anything but Oma, only read the cards upright. Sadly, I don’t speak more than a smattering of German, so with the help of Google Translate and reference to a couple of online Skatkarten sites I’ve translated her notes as well as I am able. They were written on the cards in ballpoint pen and some are quite difficult to make out. If you are familiar with German and/or Skatkarten, and spot any misinterpretations, please let me know.

Update: November 2013

I have since corresponded with my aunt Edith, Lene’s youngest daughter and, luckily, she was taught how to read the cards. Edith was able to provide a bit more detail, which I have worked into the information given below.

I should point out here that other German sources tend to assign negative meanings to the Clubs, but you’ll see from the above list that, for Lene, the “worst” cards are the Spades.

Lene’s reading instructions were, as I mentioned, quite brief – essentially shuffle, cut, lay out, read. The fact that she didn’t think it necessary to provide any details on “how” to read them suggests that she felt her method was so commonplace as to not require explanation. I have found meanings similar to hers on Kartenlegen mit Skatkarten (KmS), so I’m guessing their method of breaking down the layout and combining the cards is likewise similar. I’ll go into more detail below. To begin:

Herzdame in die mitte legen.
Karten mischen.

The same steps as described by Edith:

Herz Dame in die Mitte legen.
Karten mischen.

·     Place the Queen of Hearts (Herzdame) in the middle. {Note that Lene only mentions the Queen as a significator. Presumably all her “clients” were female, but if you are reading for a man use the King of Hearts, or select a card that represents your area of concern, for example the 10 of Spades for work.}

·     Shuffle the cards. With the left hand, lay 3 piles “to the heart”, i.e. towards you (confirmed by Edith). {What does “to the heart” mean here? Perhaps, like KmS – “2 Stapel zu sich hin abheben”, you are meant to cut towards yourself, towards your heart.}

·     Put the middle pile on the last pile, then put the two on the first pile.

·     The first 3 cards of each pile have a meaning. {I’m uncertain if she meant 3 cards from each pile or just the 3 exposed cards. KmS uses just the 3 exposed cards. Either way, check them before you recombine the piles} Here Edith made it quite clear – you look at the bottom three cards of EACH pile, combining them to give you a meaning, before placing that pile on the next one.

·     Then place the cards from the top around the Queen of Hearts:
·        Then combine what the cards say.

KmS uses a simple 9x4 layout, but despite Lene’s fancy Star arrangement, I think the breakdown would be much the same: first read the central cross - cards 1, 3, Significator, 4 and 2, combining the cards in sentence fashion. Then read the row – 11, 3, S, 4, 12, then the column – 9, 1, S, 2, 10, and finally the diagonals. Card 17 gives an overview of what’s occurring on the home front.

Update: April 2015

I’ve been studying other “large star” spreads recently and have found that the various “arms” were given different meanings, eg. past/future, obstacle/aid, etc.  I have yet to decide how I want to approach reading Oma’s star.

Now that I know we should be reading the bottom three cards of each cut, it occurs to me that, unless the middle pile (which will now be on the top) contained more than 16 cards, at least one if not all of the cards from the bottom of that pile will appear somewhere in the spread and may be worth paying particular attention to.

Lene then continues:

Vom ĂŒbrigen Haufen, 5 Karten ziehen.
Die dann auf die Karten legen was man nÀher wissen möchte.
Zum Beispiel - Herzdame, fĂŒrs Haus, Liebe, Reise, und so weiter.

And Edith:

Vom ĂŒbrigen Haufen 5 Karten ziehen,
und so auf die Karten legen
z.B auf Dich (Herz -Dame )and so on, um zu wissen, was in der nÀchsten Zeit passiert.

·        From the remaining pile, draw 5 cards.

·        Then lay the cards on what you want to know in more detail, or as
Edith put it, to know what is happening in the near future.
for example – (on the) Queen of Hearts, for the home, love, travel, and so on.

We then proceed to a second spread.

Lene:

Zuletzt alle Karten mischen.
9 Karten ziehen und so auslegen:
Wieder kombinieren was sie sagen.

Edith:

Alle Karten wieder mischen, Herz -Dame bleibt auf dem Tisch liegen.
Karten ziehen und so auslegen
dann wieder sehen was die Karten sagen.

·       Last shuffle all the cards. Edith adds: the Queen of Hearts stays on the table.

·         Draw 9 cards and lay out as follows:
·         Again combine what they say.

And that is all I have been told. Oma passed away in 1998, at the age of 95.

Edith has been very patient with my questions and requests for clarification, so I’ll leave her in peace for a while, but at some point I’d like to ask her how she combines the cards and reads the Star layout.

Update: June 2014

Sadly, Tante Edith has no more information in this regard, or perhaps doesn’t have sufficient confidence in her English to attempt an explanation. Bearing in mind my paltry German skills, this is a feeling with which I can very much sympathise.

I would love to hear from anyone who recognises any aspects of this method, or can elaborate on what I have presented.

03 March 2013

Welcome to my Special Interest blog

If you've found your way here from my main blog - So Far, So Good - thanks for coming. Do come in! I hope my interest in "fortune telling" doesn't put you off. Although if you've seen any of SFSG apart from the crochet stuff you'll already be aware of my penchant for weird.

And if you've just stumbled across this blog - Welcome! Nice to meet you.

I've been tinkering with Tarot since my early teens. Only after I confessed to my mother (with some trepidation) my interest, did she roll her eyes heavenward, sigh "Not you, too", and reveal that my grandmother read cards and coffee grounds.

We lived in Canada at the time and Oma was in Germany. In those days, international phone calls were rare/expensive and visits even more so. Sadly, as a result, I hardly knew my grandmother. But when she heard of my interest she sent me a Skat deck (32 cards - 7 to 10, J, Q, K, A) with her meanings written on the cards. In German.

Some years ago I had a go at translating the notes, but with only a German/English dictionary and her old-fashioned handwriting to contend with I wasn't terribly successful. Now, with excellent online translators, I've been able to type in her notes and get reasonably sensible results out.

This then whet my appetite for playing card reading as opposed to Tarot. Plus I had also inherited her Swedenborg cards, a Lenormand-like deck (Oma passed away in 1998). I'm translating that now, too. One thing lead to another and before I knew it I had acquired (my husband would say "Paid good money for!") another seven fortune telling decks of various types (and I'm not done yet; don't tell him).
Edit 27Apr16: Seven decks? Hahahahahaaaa, this post is SO old!

So the time has come to take the little Tarot section from my original blog and give it its own space to grow. I can't promise there will be much in the way of actual blogging here, certainly not on a regular basis. But this is where I'll be housing my growing list of cartomancy links and snippets of useful info. Perhaps you'll find something here of interest to you, too.

~~ Judy
